There may be fewer cars on the road, but Nebraskans still need to adhere to the speed limit.
That was the message from Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent Colonel John Bolduc, at today’s gubernatorial COVID-19 news briefing.
Bolduc said troopers have given out 177 speeding tickets for people going over 100 mph since March 19th.
“Needless to say, these types of speeds are dangerous for the driver and for the other motorists on the roadway,” sais Bolduc.
Bolduc says the number is a substantial increase from normal.
“It is an assumption that, in part because of the lower traffic volumes, the opportunity exists for people to speed,” said Bolduc. “Now, what possesses someone to go greater than 100 miles per hour? It would be only a guess on my part.”
Bolduc says that while troopers are advised to use discretion when contacting people during the pandemic, they’re still encouraged to enforce blatant violations.
