Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announces the city’s annual Uncle Sam Jam on July 3 is cancelled.
“With the virus present in our community, we have determined sponsoring an event – even one that might have scaled back to a fireworks display – in all likelihood would have encouraged large numbers of people to gather to get a better view,” Gaylor Baird said at her daily news update.
The yearly gathering at Oak Lake will return in 2021. The mayor encourages people to celebrate in their backyards.
Baird also announced the Mayor’s Recovery Economic Task Force whose task is to help area businesses recover from COVID-19 losses.
The task force will help businesses through development, employment resident feedback and retaining local workforce. She says the goals are to be strategic, data driven, intentional and local.
The task force will begin meeting in June with recommendations being released after July.
