ICYMI: LPS Approves School Resource Officers Despite Concerns

The Lincoln Public Schools Board of Education approved funding for school resource officers despite opposition they disproportionately affect students of color.

Debate over whether or not SROs – as they’re commonly referred to as – received backlash during the public comment section of the meeting along with other board members.  This follows outrage over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, weeks of protests across the country and the latest shooting of an unarmed black man in Kenosha, Wis.

Board member Barb Baier asked others members to slow down in order to develop a plan that helps better understand SRO effects.

“I’m deeply concerned with this ‘hurry up and get this over’ approach.  Our youth need their faith in democratic processes restored.”

The board will spend over $500,000 dollars for 12 SROs after voting 6-2.

Member Annie Mumgaard cited a 183-page report which laid out information surrounding SRO’s conduct in the district.

She said the data laid out societal ills “that ill must be faced.  We can do that tonight.  We are aware it starts.  Do our diligence on our part is to take time to lay out strong expectations, accountability measures and follow up.”

Other board members assured Mumgaard the report released two weeks ago establishes better guidelines for them to follow.
