Lincoln Police identified the 23-year-veteran who was shot Wednesday late morning while trying to serve a warrant as Mario Herrera.
Investigator Cole Jennings, who returned fire at the suspects after Herrera was shot, is on administrative leave while the situation is evaluated.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said his office will determine if the lethal force used was lawful.
As officers attempted to arrest 17-year-old Felipe Vasquez, he and 19-year-old Orion Ross tried to flee. Vasquez fired three shots, and Herrera was struck in the chest. Officer Jennings returned fire, but neither suspect was hit. Both were eventually arrested.
Herrera has been through more than 130 units of blood according to Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister. He said that’s depleted the community’s blood supply and he’s asking for your support to donate blood.
Herrera has been transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A late afternoon update on Wednesday from LPD, showed Mario Herrera remained in critical condition.
A video from LPD later in the evening showed, the Omaha Police Department escorting Herrera’s family to the level one trauma center.
The @OmahaPolice greeted our officer and family as he was transferred to an Omaha hospital this evening. We cannot thank them enough for honoring him in this way. #lnk pic.twitter.com/8kQqpNfKK7
