A Lincoln Police officer who was shot while attempting to serve a search warrant on Aug. 26 has died from his injuries sustained.
Investigator Mario Herrera, who was on the LPD force for 23 years, was transferred to the University of Nebraska Mexican Center after initial care at Bryan West Hosptial.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I have to pass on devastating news to all of you. At approximately 3:30 this morning, Mario died,” Melisa Wood, Herrera’s sister-in-law posted. “Carrie and his 4 amazing children were able to be with him. I am at a loss for words as we try to process this. Please pray for Carrie, his kids and our entire family.”
Herrera had shown areas of improvement over the last few days according to his CaringBridge journal, but fell “gravely ill” Sunday night.
Herrera left behind four children and a wife.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve his death. Pleasecontinue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Empathetic, kind, and utterly committed to serving victims and protecting his community, Mario was an exemplary human beingwho just happened to be a Lincoln police officer,” The Lincoln Police Department posted on Facebook.
Lincoln police officers will be draping their badges to honor his sacrifice and memory.
The community banded together to raise several hundred thousand dollars and donate significant amounts of blood in his honor.
