Lincoln Police are investigating two sides of a road rage story that ended when shots were fired. Officers were called to Old Cheney and Highway 2 around 1:30 on Monday afternoon.
Police contacted 29 year old Christian Garrett who stated that he was driving a black 2019 Dodge Caravan with Virginia plates westbound on Highway 2 east of Old Cheney when he was flipped off by a female driver. Each driver reported separate accounts of being cut off in traffic or what was perceived as being cut off in traffic.
As the vehicles approached the intersection just east of Old Cheney, Garrett stated he observed the female point a handgun at him. At that time, Garrett retrieved a handgun, pointed it at the female’s vehicle, and shot at it one time. When the 53 year old female was contacted, officers observed a bullet hole in the driver’s side rear door of a silver 2011 Lexus 4 door. The bullet hole was just inches away from where the driver was sitting. The female denied having a gun and officers were unable to locate a gun. The female indicated that she was talking on the phone at the time of the shooting.
Officers recovered the handgun reportedly used from Garrett’s vehicle and he was taken into custody. Garrett was arrested for Attempted 2nd Degree Assault and Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony.
This investigation is ongoing and we are asking anyone that was in the area of Old Cheney and Highway 2 who may have witnessed any portion of this incident to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
