Lincoln residents are scooping the record snow fall off their driveways and sidewalks today.

The official measurement at the Lincoln Airport recorded 14.5 inches making it the second snowiest calendar day ever – next to 19 inches in February of 1965.

This January is now the snowiest January on record with 18 total inches.

That tally is also the 7th snowiest month Lincoln has ever seen since records began. The average amount of snow usually seen this month is just over six inches.

The storm closed schools, businesses and city services. It left numerous drivers stranded in streets in Lincoln and on major roads throughout the region.

Lincoln’s bus service canceled for the first time since 1974.

The system dumped one to two inches of snow per hour during the afternoon Monday.

However, state transportation crews were able to keep interstate 80 open the entire day.

Nebraska State Troopers responded to more than 300 weather-related incidents during Monday’s s record-breaking snowfall. Troopers performed 313 motorist assists and responded to 28 crashes.

Throughout the day, five NDOT plows were struck by other vehicles. None of those crashes involved injuries. Four of those plows were able to return to service and continued their work.

One crash forced the closure of eastbound Interstate 80 near Lexington for approximately three hours.
