The Lincoln Police Department has made a change in how accident reports can be viewed through their website (https://cjis.lincoln.ne.gov/~lpd/ACCIDENTS.htm).
A person must know a case number or name and date of birth of a person involved in the accident in order to access the report. Unfortunately, LPD has had a large number of individuals listed on motor vehicle accident reports who have been targeted as part of a scam requesting payment for various legal matters via MoneyPaks or other prepaid cards. So far, the department has investigated at least 86 cases where 46 victims were scammed out of money. The total loss is at least $30,800. The individual or individuals responsible for this scam will most often identify himself as an officer or detective with LPD. The suspect(s) also has the ability to have your caller ID show a number associated with LPD when he calls. Investigators have been able to identify and contact individuals through their investigations who did not know they had been scammed until contacted by investigators.
The Lincoln Police Department and other law enforcement agencies will never call to ask for direct payment of fines, court costs, warrants, or other legal matters. If an individual claiming to be with law enforcement calls to request payment via a Green Dot MoneyPak or other form of prepaid gift card you should not follow their instructions.
If you receive a call from an individual claiming to be with law enforcement who is requesting payment in any fashion you should hang up immediately. Additionally, you can call the Lincoln Police Department at 402-441-6000 to make a report about the suspicious phone call and/or verify the validity of any call made from law enforcement personnel.
The Lincoln Police Department does not want to see your involvement in an accident lead to further strain.
