The names of local officers who have died in the line of duty were read during a National Police Week ceremony outside the City-County building in Lincoln Thursday afternoon.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird proclaimed Thursday, May 18th as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day. “In honor of the law enforcement officers who serve us everyday and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice or have become disabled in their courageous service to others.”
Police Chief Teresa Ewins wants people to also remember the law enforcement members that were lost to illness and suicide. ” These people should be honored for their service and sacrifice to the community.”
Seven LPD officers and three LSO deputies have died in the line of duty. Their names are on a memorial wall outside the law enforcement center.
