Tax Breaks Available for Tornado Property-Damage Victims

If your property in Lincoln/Lancaster County was damaged during last Friday’s wave of tornados, you may be able to have your property valuation adjusted by county assessors, resulting in some property tax relief.

KLIN News spoke with Lancaster County Assessor Dan Nolte, who is asking any affected residents to get in contact with his office if they are interested. The damage to the property needs to be at least 20% of the current 2024 assessed value.

Nolte said these types of claims don’t occur very often, and are usually just a singular property often damaged by a fire.

“So this is new for us,” said Nolte. “I’ll have some appraisers driving out in the Waverly area in the next couple days. We have not had a lot of calls on this yet, but I think it’s maybe too soon for people to think to do that.”

The Assessors office will come out to asses your property. Any information you have have available from an insurance adjuster or a contractor, Nolte says they will take a look at.

The deadline to file for a re-evaluation is July 15.

To get started with a property re-evaluation, contact the Assessors Office at assessor@lancaster.ne.gov or 402-441-7463, or visit their website here. You will need to file a Report of Destroyed Real Property.
