Lincoln Police will be launching a back-to-school traffic safety enforcement project on August 12. Sergeant Sara Genoways says extra officers will be watching for speeding drivers in school zones and people who drive past school bus stop arms.
“We will respond to citizen complaints if they are noticing people are violating the school zone,” Genoways says. “Otherwise, officers will go to where they have typically seen violations or places that have been a chronic problem.”
One school you can expect to see officers on patrol is Hartley Elementary at 33rd and Vine. Genoways says there have been a number of citation issued by officers in recent years. A grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office is paying for the Back-To-School Traffic Enforcement Program.
Drivers are reminded to obey flashing yellow lights in school zones from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m., the busiest times for children traveling to and from schools. The speed limit in school zones is 25 mph.
Genoways says fines for school zone violations can be up to $600. ” Slow down in and around school zones, watch for pedestrian crossings and expect increased pedestrian activity.”
