Instead of the traditional way of squeezing or hitting the back of your ketchup bottle, how do you feel about sprinkling your ketchup on your food?
Last weekend, Heinz Netherlands gave patrons of one Amsterdam snack market Heinz Ketchup Sprinkles (Hagelchup). The name, Hagelchup, is in reference to hagelslag. What is hagelslag? Good question.
A popular Dutch meal for breakfast or lunch is buttered bread with chocolate sprinkles (ewwww!!). The hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) refers to hail or hailstorm… thus Hagel + Ketchup = Hagelchup (ketchup sprinkles). I can sorta see how the sprinkles look like hailstones, except they don’t. Lol. I need more time going down the Internet rabbit hole.
Anyways… since the Dutch LOOVE dipping their French fries in mayonnaise, Heinz Netherlands wanted to persuade the Amsterdam folk that ketchup is the way to go for dipping.
For reference, apparently mayo is advertised as the authentic American taste of mayonnaise for fries (instead of ketchup, or for us Midwesterners – ranch). And since the Dutch are huge fans of mayo, Heinz thought they could influence patrons with their spin on hagleslag (Hagelchup).
The Hagelchup came in glass bottles and was labeled just like Heinz Ketchup. In the video below, patrons eat French fries from a French fries cone with mayo and Hagelchup sprinkled on top.
Those who tried it said it was sweet and crunchy. One person said it was better than normal ketchup.
Unfortunately, this campaign a marketing stunt so we will not get a chance to sprinkle ketchup on our foods. Heinz, I think you should reconsider! Lol.
