Morel Mushroom Season Underway in Nebraska

A spring tradition has begun in Nebraska.  Morel mushroom hunters have begun fanning out across the state in search of the spongy edible fungus.  “Those morel mushroom are so tasty,” says Nebraska Game and Parks public information officer Greg Wagner.  “They have a nutty, earthy flavor to them, unlike anything else and that’s why at times, commercially, they are available for $50 or $60 a pound.

Wagner gave KLIN News some tips for finding what is referred to as the King of the Mushrooms. “Look for morels near dead and decaying trees like cottonwoods. Walk slowly and scan the ground carefully. Where you find one, you should find more.”

Wagner stressed it is important for morel mushroom hunters in Nebraska to know they must get permission from the landowner to go onto private property, whether the land is posted or not. Mushroom hunters are reminded it’s illegal to park at bridges along public roadways.

Those kayaking or air boating are reminded that river sandbars and woodlands are nearly all privately-owned and permission must be obtained to go on to those areas to look for morels. Wagner also advises hunters to use insect repellent and wear socks and long pants.

Wagner also recommends bringing a mesh bag to collect the morels.  “The mesh bag allows sand to fall through and gives the mushrooms some air.  The worst thing you could probably use is a plastic grocery sack.”

Wagner also advises take along a pocketknife to cut morels or pinch them with your fingers and watch out for false morels.  They are red, have a brain-like lobe and are solid on the inside.  Wagner says you don’t want to eat them.
