Lancaster County Board Approves Site for Downtown Lincoln Convention Center

The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved the public-private Garfield site near South 13th and M Streets as the future home of Lincoln’s Downtown Convention Center. The decision affirms a March 20 recommendation by the Assemble Lincoln Standing Committee, following months of review.

In addition to selecting the site, the board agreed to submit an application to the state under the Convention Center Facility Financing Assistance Act. Known as “turnback” financing, the program would return a portion of state sales tax collected in designated districts to help fund the project. A block south of the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel, a Capitol District designation of the proposed site provides added flexibility in forming those districts.

Officials estimate the new convention center could generate more than $18.5 million annually in economic impact, boosting tourism, jobs, and local tax revenue.

Commissioners praised the collaborative efforts behind the project and emphasized its potential to stimulate downtown revitalization and long-term economic growth.

“This is a tremendous step forward in fostering local economic development and enhancing Lincoln’s visibility,” said County Board Chair Rick Vest.

The County Board now looks ahead to finalizing a development schedule, including requests for design, construction, and management proposals.
