The Catholic church has it’s first American Pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost was born in Chicago and spent many years doing missionary work in Peru. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV and many have expressed shock and surprise that the Cardinals chose him after just two days of voting.
“I was very surprised that the cardinals would chose an American,” says Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln. He says the fact that he was elected so quickly on the second day of the conclave is an indication that he impressed his peers during the secretive voting process.
Governor Jim Pillen reacted to the election of Pope Leo XIV. “This is a historic moment for the Catholic Church, and an opportunity for Christians across the planet to reflect on our faith and the ultimate love of Jesus Christ. Suzanne and I join believers around our state and world as we welcome and pray for Pope Leo XIV.”
“I am amazed by this historic moment to witness the first ever American Pope,” says Nebraska U-S Senator Pete Ricketts. “I pray for the Holy Father Leo XIV and look forward to a long-lasting pontificate.”
