LFR crews battled a three-alarm fire at a home near 31st and Sherman in south Lincoln around 1:30 Sunday morning. LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says the fire started on the back porch and quickly spread to the house.
“The cause was negligent burning of leaves in an outdoor portable stove and it was left unattended.” Lierman says the fire spread to neighboring homes resulting in about $5,000 each. No one was hurt and the five residents were displaced and are staying with family.
Lierman says this is a harsh reminder that outdoor burning can lead to tragic outcomes. “It is not legal to be burning yard waste in the City of Lincoln and we are in a burn ban.”
