LPD: New Dangerous Driving Law Working

By Tom Stanton May 14, 2025 | 2:21 PM

The Lincoln Police Department has had nine vehicles towed since the Nuisance Vehicle Ordinance went into effect on April 15.  “This new law allows LPD to impound vehicles involved in street racing and reckless driving,” says Public Information Manager Erika Thomas. “Vehicles will be towed, but can be immediately released after the first violation, along with receiving a written notice.”

She says vehicles will be impounded for 10 days on the second or subsequent violations. Examples of those deemed nuisance vehicles and impounded include:

2021 Ford Mustang driven by a 21-year-old Eagle man racing on McCormick Drive.  The driver was cited for exhibition of speed.                                                                                                                       2023 Jeep Renegade driven by a 32-year-old Lincoln man speeding on ‘O’ Street.  The vehicle was located at suspect’s residence and towed.
1997 Ford F-150 driven by 20-year-old Milford man observed revving engine, squealing tires and driving recklessly on ‘O’ Street. The driver pulled over and was cited for DUI and willful reckless driving.
2014 Chevy Malibu driven by 20-year-old Lincoln man reported in two road rage incidents. Driver arrested for assault, disturbing the peace, reckless driving and other charges. Also issued citation for disorderly vehicle.

“This meaningful change will help protect our community and prevent future tragedies,” Thomas says. LPD has responded to six deaths on ‘O’ Street in the last five years, along with more than 700 nighttime crashes and more than 800 injury crashes.
