Lincoln Police will conducting a traffic enforcement effort on one of the city’s busiest streets Memorial Day weekend. Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says extra officers will be out Friday, Saturday and Sunday night’s on ‘O’ Street from 17th to 84th streets.
Officers will focus on unsafe driving, trespassing in closed business lots, littering, noise complaints and alcohol-related offenses. “Memorial Day weekend has historically drawn crowds to the area of “O” Street between 44th and 52nd streets to observe and participate in the informal showcasing of unique automobiles,” Thomas says.
“However, as the night progresses, LPD has routinely observed an increase in dangerous driving behaviors, including excessive speeding, reckless maneuvers, and violations that put both drivers and bystanders at risk.”
Three years ago a fiery crash killed two young women and sent a vehicle into a crowd of bystanders near 51st and ‘O” and injured 19 of them. “LPD wants everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend and the safety of our community is our priority,” Thomas says.
The enforcement project is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
