Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed several bills Wednesday introduced on his behalf, aimed at protecting the state’s agriculture industry, children’s online safety, and the reliability of Nebraska’s electric grid.
Pillen signed LB246, banning the production, sale, and promotion of lab-grown or “fake” meat in the state. Sponsored on the governor’s behalf by Sen. Barry DeKay, the bill builds on a previous executive order restricting state agencies from purchasing lab-grown meat. Pillen called the ban a necessary step to protect consumers and Nebraska’s agricultural economy.
The Governor also approved three child-focused online safety bills—LB140, LB383, and LB172—which together restrict cell phone use in schools, expand parental controls on social media, and prohibit AI-generated child pornography. “The research is clear about the harms of overexposure to social media,” Pillen said, crediting lawmakers for helping advance the measures.
Lastly , Pillen signed LB526, which sets new rules for cryptocurrency mining operations. The law requires miners to notify utilities of planned operations and contribute to the cost of potential infrastructure upgrades. It also allows utilities to restrict mining during peak energy demand and requires annual reporting on energy use.
Pillen posed for signing pictures with the corresponding lawmakers, each prominently featuring his desk top copy of President Donald Trump’s book Save America.
