LFR crews were called to a home near 21st and Sumner around 9:30 Thursday morning and found a young woman who had climbed out of a second story window onto the roof. “She told the 911 center she woke up to a burning smell in her nose and there was smoke in her apartment,” says Captain Daren Merryman. “She did the absolutely perfect thing by shutting the door to her bedroom and getting to a safe spot outside where the air is fresh instead of fighting through all of the smoke inside.”
Merryman says crews put a ladder up and brought her down. She was not injured but Merryman says she was shaken up. “She was upset as you can imagine if your awaken from your sleep to a burning sensation in your nose and smoke. It’s a very scary situation and she handled in well.”
Merryman says the source of the smoke was food left cooking on the stove.
