Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an Omaha man on drug and weapons charges following a traffic stop early Saturday morning near NW 48th and W.’O’ Street.  Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says when the deputy stopped Brandon Byrd’s SUV around 2:30 a.m. for not having a license plate there was a smell of marijuana coming from inside and Byrd was asked to step out.

During a search deputies opened the hood and found a loaded Hi-Point .45 caliber pistol in the wheel well. Byrd was booked into the Lancaster County Jail for second offense possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

He was also cited for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, possessing a weapon during a commission of a felony and no front license plate.  Byrd is no stranger to law enforcement. Houchin says he has served jail time for being a felon in possession of a deadly weapon in the past.

“He has had a very long record in Douglas County and has done time twice at the state corrections service.”
