State Senator George Dungan has announced his bid for re-election to the Nebraska Legislature, representing District 26 in northeast Lincoln.

A progressive voice and registered Democrat in the technically non-partisan Unicameral, Dungan has proved to be a prominent opposition leader in the Republican controlled body.

Since elected in 2022, Dungan has aided and lead numerous party-line filibustering efforts against conservative legislation, most recently including efforts to blunt voter initiatives (minimum wage, paid-sick leave, medical cannabis), The Stand with Women Act, and Winner-Take-All, to name a few.

“Many Nebraskans are fed up—and they should be,” said Dungan in a statement, referring efforts from his colleagues to “dismantle” those ballot measures. He added, “the Legislature failed to focus on targeted property tax relief for those who need it most, instead, they focused on giving tax breaks to millionaires and out-of-state landowners.”

In his re-election announcement, Dungan highlighted the achievements of his first term:

  • Supporting healthy moms and healthy babies by creating the Nebraska Prenatal Plus Program, which expands access to prenatal services for moms and their families.
  • Implementing policies to make childcare and housing more affordable
  • Bolstering training opportunities to help workers access higher-wage jobs
  • Eliminating taxes on essential products like diapers
  • Expanding nurse home-visitation services
  • Strengthening the Creative District Program, which directly benefits the economy of northeast Lincoln’s University Place Neighborhood.
  • Investing in court services to save money
  • Increasing funding for teacher salaries and support staff to strengthen our schools
  • Supporting military veterans by creating a statewide Suicide Morality Review Team to help prevent suicide among those who have served their country

“I want to continue to focus on ways we can make life more affordable here in Lincoln because Nebraska should be a place where hard work pays off and families can build a future, not just get by,” Dungan said. “This campaign is about putting working families first—listening to them and making sure they have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.”

During his legislative tenure, Dungan served on the Revenue and Banking, Commerce, and Insurance committees. He was also appointed to serve on the committee that oversees an interstate compact for adult supervision. Before his career in politics, Dungan was a practicing public defender and also worked in juvenile courts. He currently operates a private law practice and lives in northeast Lincoln with his wife and dog, Redford.
