A Nebraska State Patrol Trooper was injured Monday night in Omaha when the trooper’s patrol unit was struck by a large truck. Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says it happened around 8:30 as troopers were performing traffic control on Interstate 80 near 50th Street as the Omaha Police Department was handling a crash in the area.
“The initial crash was blocking the shoulder and one lane of traffic,” Thomas says. “While the trooper’s unit was parked, with emergency lights activated, a box truck struck the cruiser.” The trooper was inside the cruiser at the time and suffered non-life threatening injuries. Thomas says additional troopers and Omaha police officers were on scene immediately and helped the trooper get out of the vehicle safely.
The trooper was taken to Bergan Mercy Hospital. The Nebraska State Patrol has asked the Omaha Police Department to investigate the crash. Monday’s incident is the third crash in less than two weeks involving NSP cruisers.
Thomas says troopers have issued 57 citations for violating the Move Over Law in 2025. That compares to 55 at the same point in 2024 and 39 in 2023.
