Lincoln residents are doing a better job of preventing thieves from breaking into their vehicles. LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says so far this year thefts from automobiles are at the lowest level since 2013.
“From January through May we had 630 reports. That was down 18 percent from 2024 and 42 percent from the five year average,” Thomas says. In 2020 LPD hit it’s peak of the last five years at 3,144. “This year, if the trend continues, we’re on pace for anywhere between 1,400 and 1,450 so that would be more than a 50 percent drop from five years ago.”
Thomas says it appears people are heeding the advice police have been giving. “Always lock your doors, take valuables and guns with you, put belongings in the trunk and out of sight and never leave keys or key fobs in the car.”
She also advises parking in well-lit, busy areas when possible.
