Lincoln Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars. Captain Todd Kocian says it began back in April when she was contacted by someone in China claiming to be a police officer.
“She was told there was an attempt to use her passport to flee the country,” Kocian says. “About a month later she was contacted again, this time the individual said someone attempted to use her credit card to purchase narcotics.”
Through the conversations, Kocian says the woman was ultimately convinced to send two payments totaling $200,060 to an unfamiliar account. Kocian is urging residents who receive these types of messages to take a step back and think before sending any money “Much like other frauds, you just kind of get wrapped up and believe what your told and things move fast.”
