Bicyclist Killed in Collision With Amtrak Train in Lincoln

Lincoln Police say a man crossing train tracks at 33rd and Cornhusker around 12:30 Monday morning was killed after being hit by an Amtrak train.  “The body of an unidentified man was found in the ditch west of the crossing and south of the tracks,” says Public Information Manager Erika Thomas.  “The man’s bicycle was found on the rocks just south of the tracks.”

Thomas says through witness interviews, police determined the man was biking south through the crossing when he was struck by the train.  “Investigators were told the railroad crossing
arms were down, the lights were flashing and the train sounded its horn.”

The intersection was shut down for several hours but has since been reopened. The investigation is ongoing as investigators work to identify the man and an autopsy is
being conducted that may provide additional information.

This was the second deadly train crash in the past four days.  A 24-year-old Lincoln man was killed after being struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train near Emerald just after 8:00 Thursday night.
