A Lincoln man escaped a fiery crash scene over the weekend with help from a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Around 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, LSO and Waverly Fire and Rescue were called to the intersection of N. 162nd and Highway 6 on a report of a car on fire near a stretch of railroad tracks.

LSO Public Information Manager Kelsey Cruz says the arriving deputy found a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica fully engulfed in flames and man outside the car near the front drivers side tire.

“The deputy then pulled the individual safely away from the scene,” Cruz said. The driver, a 57-year-old male from Lincoln, and was taken to a local hospital for minor burn injuries to his legs. Its unknown at this time what sparked the fire.

Preliminary information suggests the driver crashed into a set of shunt wires on the railroad tracks which run along Highway 6. No other cars were involved in the crash.

Cruz says alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash, but any citations are pending further investigation. Damage to the railroad tracks is estimated to be around $6,000.
