The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday in Columbus, following an incident in which a police officer was attacked with a knife.

According to investigators, Columbus Police officers were conducting an investigation around 4:54 p.m. near 13th Street and 30th Avenue when a woman, identified as 33-year-old Lauree Jankowski of Columbus, allegedly attacked an officer with a knife. A second officer then discharged their firearm, striking Jankowski.

NSP says officers rendered life-saving aid, but Jankowski was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer was treated at Columbus Community Hospital and released later that evening. A knife was recovered at the scene.

In accordance with state law, the shooting will be subject to a grand jury investigation. The Columbus Police Department requested the Nebraska State Patrol’s Special Investigations Team to lead the investigation, which remains ongoing.
