Powerful Storm Leaves Thousands Without Power Across Lincoln

By Tom Stanton Aug 9, 2025 | 9:18 AM

Severe thunderstorms rolled through Lincoln and Lancaster County early Saturday morning, downing trees and powerlines.  Lincoln Electric System says nearly 30,000 customers were without power as 0f 9:00 Saturday morning.

The storms packed a big punch, with a 91mph wind gust reported at the Lincoln Airport.  Thousands are also without power in Waverly, Sewards and other communities.  Lincoln Transportation and Utilities says 69 traffic signals were affected by Saturday morning’s storm.

Drivers are urged to treat these intersections as four-way stops and proceed with caution.  LTU says signals may be dark, flashing yellow, or flashing red until power can be restored.  Lincoln Parks and Recreation is evaluating potential tree damage and is currently coordinating cleanup efforts.
