Lincoln Police were called to an apartment building near S 12th and High Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. They saw heavy smoke coming from the 2nd floor of the complex. Residents were evacuating the building when an officer contacted 30 year old Trent Burgess near 12th and Arapahoe.
Burgess made admissions about starting the fire and it got out of control after adding an accelerant. Neighbors also told officers that Burgess told them he was responsible for starting the fire as they were leaving the building.
All the apartments were occupied except one. Everyone made it out safely and no one was hurt. Investigators estimate the damage to the building at $200,000.
Burgess was arrested for 1st Degree Arson. Police add that Burgess was under the influence at the time of the fire.
