A medical advisor to the governor warns the worst is yet to come as Nebraska prepare’s for a tough April in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
At Friday’s gubernatorial news briefing, an executive director for UNMC’s Global Center for Health Security, Dr. James Lawler reminded everyone that it’s important to remember that the situation is still in its early stages in the state.
“We’re in the second inning of this game, so to speak and we are going to learn more, but unfortunately in our state, as in others, we’re going to see more cases and unfortunately more deaths,” said Lawler.
Lawler said medical professionals still need more information to understand how to best keep the spread of the virus at a manageable level, even as testing capabilities expand, and the best things people can do is follow health directives and CDC guidelines.
He described the measures as swiss cheese; full of holes, to be sure, but when stacked on top of each other, they can make a real difference in slowing the spread of the virus.
Lawler says things won’t go back to the way things were before the virus until a vaccine is discovered, ” but what we can do is keep the epidemic curve in our communities at a level that is low enough that we preserve the healthcare system and maintain that ability to provide high-quality healthcare for everyone.”
