Parks and Recreation staff is conducting two controlled burns on Tuesday, April 22, in Wilderness Park.

The burn locations include about five acres east of the First Street trailhead parking lot (P5) and about five acres south of Bison Trail at the north end of Wilderness Park.

The Red and Green Trails north of Old Cheney Road, between markers 34 and 23, will be closed until noon Tuesday, April 23.

“Controlled burns are a vital land management tool, especially in areas with native grasses and plants,” said Aaron Druery, Parks and Recreation Greenways District Supervisor. “They help prevent the spread of invasive species like cedar trees before they outcompete native vegetation, reduce wildfire risk by limiting excess dry material, and enhance overall habitat health and biodiversity. Our team closely monitors weather conditions and air quality to ensure each burn is carried out safely.”
