The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department says three teenagers quest for coffee ended in disaster last Friday morning. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says the teens ignored road closed signs and drove their cars onto a bridge under construction at 1st and Old Cheney around 9:30 p.m.

“The first one had to stop because there’s a whole bunch of construction equipment.” Houchin says the first vehicle was driven by a 15-year-old girl who had a school learners permit.  Her Audi S4  got stuck in the uncured cement and remains there. “It will have to stay on it until an engineer can inspect the bridge.  We also did not want to get a tow truck up there and do anymore damage.”

The other two cars were able to be driven off the bridge.  Houchin says an 18-year-old boy who followed the girl’s car was able to stop and avoid a collision.  But a second 18-year-old boy driving the third car crashed into to back of it.   Houchin says the reason they went around the signs is because they wanted to go and get coffee in downtown Lincoln.

Damage to the bridge is estimated at $100,000 to $200,000.   There were no injuries in the crash and and all three teens received traffic citations.
