Statewide Tornado Drill Set For Wednesday

By News Mar 23, 2021 | 3:01 PM

A statewide tornado drill will be held across Nebraska Wednesday morning as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.  Brian Smith is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley and says during the drill sirens will sound in some counties across the state.

“The decision to do the sirens will be up to each county, whether they want to participate,” Smith says. He says some counties will sound the sirens and some won’t .  Smith says it’s important to know the difference between watches and warnings.  A severe thunderstorm or tornado watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms.  A warning means you should take action and seek shelter.

Smith says the test will be sent out on weather radio and social media to reach as many people as possible.  He is encouraging everyone, including schools, business and organizations to use the tornado drill to practice their safety plan and know where to go during an actual emergency.
