Lincoln Police have arrested a 20 year old man after they say he rammed a police cruiser and tried to run over an officer in a hotel parking lot back on March 8th. Police were called to the the Luxury Inn at 2940 NW 12th Street on a report of suspicious activity. The caller advised that a white SUV had pulled into the lot and no one got out for over 15 minutes. The caller could see what looked like lighters flicking and potential narcotics usage inside the vehicle.
When officers arrived, they contacted the driver and passenger of a white Kia Sorento parked in the lot. Officer Erin Spilker says as the officers contacted the driver, 20-year-old Aron Wells Jr, he began trying to hide a backpack in the vehicle and was moving items under his legs.
Spilker says the officer asked what was under his legs and the driver produced a measuring cup from a scale that had marijuana residue on it. As the officer asked Wells to exit the vehicle, he started reaching in-between the console and seat of his vehicle. Despite the officer’s orders to put his hands on the steering wheel, Wells continued to reach for the console area again. As the officer tried to open the door while ordering Wells to show his hands, Wells place the vehicle in reverse ramming the police cruiser parked behind his vehicle. Wells then accelerated towards another officer who had to quickly move out of the away to avoid being hit.
Spilker says officers then pursued the vehicle, but discontinued the chase after the vehicle was seen engaging in dangerous driving behavior. The damage to the police cruiser was around $2,000. An officer located a piped with suspected methamphetamine residue that had been discarded from the vehicle as well.
Officers located the vehicle involved in this incident two days later. On March 23rd investigators located Wells at a residence in the 4600 block of Meredith and he was taken into custody without incident. He was arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer, Criminal Attempt of a 2nd Degree Assault, Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Criminal Mischief $1500-$5000.
