Due to to this weekends heat wave that will push temperatures about triple digits Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach will be swinging open it’s doors for extended hours Saturday and Sunday to provide a cool place to stay anyone who needs it.

Executive Director Alynn Sampson says due to the excessive heat, the agency will extend its hours and be open as a cooling center on Saturday (June 21) from 11:30 am – 9 pm and Sunday (June 22) from 11:30 am – 6:30 pm with meals served as usual from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Water and ice will be available, and anyone from the community is welcome.

Sampson says dangerously high temperatures are especially tough for their guests experiencing homelessness who may already struggle with other challenges, such as addiction, mental illness, and food insecurity.

She says you don’t have to be experiencing homelessness to stop by.  “Maybe your air conditioning just can’t keep up when it gets to be this temperature, just come in here.”  She says there will be games available along with a movie.

KLIN News also talked to Sampson about donations they could use from Lincoln residents.

Donations of bottled water and electrolyte drinks are needed and can be dropped off Monday-Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm or by appointment.
