Multiple Republican sources confirmed Friday that Rep. Don Bacon will not seek reelection in 2026, leaving the republican field wide open for Nebraska’s competitive 2nd Congressional District seat.

A national GOP strategist familiar with Bacon’s plans confirmed to the Nebraska Examiner the three-term congressman has made his decision and indicated as much in recent conversations. At least five other Nebraska Republicans echoed the news, which was first reported by Punchbowl News.

Bacon’s campaign has not yet commented publicly, but insiders say they’re anticipating an announcement as early as next week.

The district — covering Douglas and Saunders Counties and parts of Sarpy County — is considered one of the nation’s last few swing districts. Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general, has fended off multiple Democratic challengers since first winning the seat in 2016.

Local Democrats were quick to react, with party chair Jane Kleeb saying her party is “ready.” Three Democrats have either entered or are exploring the race: nonprofit leader Denise Powell, State Sen. John Cavanaugh, and Douglas County Court Clerk Crystal Rhoades.

On the Republican side, possible contenders include former State Sen. Brett Lindstrom, Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding, and Bacon’s 2024 primary challenger, Dan Frei.
