Capital Humane Society Breaks Adoption Record During One-Day Event

The Capital Humane Society saw a record-breaking turnout during its one-day adoption event Friday, placing 85 pets into new homes—the most ever adopted in a single day in the shelter’s history.

The event, sponsored by Union Bank & Trust, covered all adoption fees for cats, dogs, and other animals. Executive Director Matt Madcharo said the response from the community exceeded expectations.

“Our previous record for a single day was 60 adoptions,” Madcharo said. “To see 85 pets find homes in just one day is incredible.”

Of the 85 adopted, 39 were dogs or puppies. Madcharo says this is a big win for the shelter, which had been operating over capacity for dogs.

“This came at the perfect time,” Madcharo said, adding that lost pet admissions often spike over the Independence Day weekend. “Getting pets out of the shelter and into homes, whether through adoption or foster, helps free up space for what could be a very busy weekend.”

Madcharo said the shelter opened its doors Friday with nearly 400 animals in its care. By Monday morning, that number had dropped to 300.

“It was a very busy day for staff and volunteers, but everyone pulled together,” he said. “I don’t know how we’ll ever top that number again — but we’ll try.”
