Lincoln Police have provided additional details in Monday afternoon’s crash on Antelope Valley Parkway near the Bob Devaney Sports Center that claimed the lives of a brother and sister. Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says a red 2014 Cadillac ATS driven by 18-year-old Karwan Breem was northbound on Antelope Valley Parkway around 1:30 when he changed lanes and accelerated rapidly to pass two vehicles.
“He hydroplaned on the wet road, drove up onto the curb, then lost control, spinning and sliding across into the southbound lane, colliding with a blue 2017 Nissan Frontier pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old Oklahoma man,” Thomas says.
Police say Breem and his 15-year-old sister, Karolin, who was riding in the vehicle, were both taken to a local hospital by Lincoln Fire & Rescue where they died from their injuries. The driver of the truck, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both siblings attended Lincoln North Star High School and were also attending summer school according to the school principle. Karwan was expected to graduate this week from summer school and North Star. Karolin was going to be a sophomore at North Star this fall.
Lincoln Public Schools said counselors, social workers and psychologists are at North Star on Tuesday to support students. A memorial for the Breem’s has been set up at the school’s counseling center and will be available for three days.
The items will then be given to the family.
