The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Jay Petersen of Lincoln was the man killed in a one vehicle crash after fleeing from a traffic stop west of Lincoln Monday night.  Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says a deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop on the speeding vehicle on a gravel road near SW 98th and West ‘O’ Street.
“The lights went on and fifteen seconds later the crash happened near West ‘A’ Street.  Deputies at the scene did CPR right away.”  Despite those efforts, Petersen died at the scene.  Houchin says Petersen was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the crash.  The deputy has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol and because it’s considered an in custody death, Houchin says a grand jury will be convened.
