A surprise ceremony was held Friday morning at Station 14 as Lincoln Fire & Rescue named Dave Backhus as the 2024 Doug Wells Memorial Firefighter of the Year. Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says Backhus is well known among Lincoln Fire & Rescue for his unwavering dedication to the profession and the community.

“He is an honorable public servant and a long-standing member of LFR Honor Guard where he holds the position of LFR Honor Guard Commander.” Backhus coordinates active and retiree funeral services.

“Dave shows respect and empathy as he goes above and beyond to take the time to speak with family members to ensure they receive the type of service they would like for their loved one, Lierman says.  “He routinely works additional hours outside of his regular assignment to accomplish his roles and responsibilities which he takes seriously.”

Backhus is a Hazmat Technician that requires additional training and keeps Hazmat-14 and Air-14 in top condition to remain ready to serve at a moment’s notice.  “Dave Backhus is a true inspiration and role model for other firefighters. His level of dedication sets him apart from others,” Lierman says.
