The Lincoln Police Department is reporting that auto thefts and attempts in the city have dropped by 36% compared to the same time frame in 2024.

LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas shared updated statistics Wednesday morning, saying in from Jan. 1 to July 14, 2024, officers took 588 reports of auto thefts—197 being attempts, or 33.5%. But over the same time frame in 2025, officers took 378 reports of auto thefts—51 being attempts, or 13.5%. This marks a 74% decrease in attempted auto thefts alone.

While this statistic is promising, Thomas says the percentage of unlocked vehicles being stole has risen 41% in 2024 to 63% in 2025.

“We’d like to remind drivers to follow vehicle safety tips like locking your car doors, parking inside a secure garage when possible, taking your keys, removing or hiding valuables and firearms, never leave your car running unattended, and using anti theft devices when possible,” Thomas said.

LPD provided a map showing where the auto thefts and attempts of 2025 occurred.

“We’re asking the public, if your vehicle is taken, please call LPD at 402-441-6000 or 911 in an emergency,” said Thomas.

Asked by reporters, Thomas said she could not speculate on why this drop has occurred. But she did note, citing LPD’s Crime Analysis Unit, the “Kia Boyz” trend of 2022-24 has seemed to fizzle out.
