A 24-year-old Lincoln man is dead after he was struck by a train near Emerald just after 8:00 Thursday night. Lancaster County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says it happened near NW 84th and W. Haven Road.
“The train engineer observed this individual ten car lengths away. The train was coming around the corner and saw the individual and he was able to honk his horn twice.” Houchin says the Burlington Northern Santa Fe engineer applied the emergency brakes but could not get stopped before the collision.
Houchin says the engineer told investigators Amadio Loya turned around and looked at the train when the horns sounded but kept on walking before he was hit. The train was traveling at 40-45 miles per hour.
Loya died at the scene. Houchin says there is no indication that this was a suicide.
