LES Offers Energy Conservation Tips During Extreme Heat

By Chase Porter Jul 28, 2025 | 5:00 PM

With temperatures soaring across southeast Nebraska, Lincoln Electric System (LES) is reminding residents how to stay cool and save money… without overloading their power bills.

LES spokesperson Kelley Porter said the public-utility is promoting a series of low and no-cost energy-saving tips during the current heat wave, which include setting thermostats to the highest comfortable temperature, keeping blinds closed during the hottest part of the day, and using small kitchen appliances instead of ovens.

“High temperatures can lead to higher energy usage and, of course, bills,” Porter said. “Even small steps like turning ceiling fans counterclockwise or caulking around windows can make a difference.”

LES is also encouraging customers to visit LES.com/HomeTips for more conservation strategies, including its Peak Rewards incentive program, which offers bill credits for reducing electricity use during peak hours.

For households struggling to pay utility bills, Porter said help is available—and no residential shutoffs will take place during or the day after a heat advisory.

“We understand unplanned hardships can make it challenging to pay electric bills,” she said. “We offer payment plans and work with groups like Community Action Partnership and United Way to connect people to assistance.”

LES customers facing financial difficulty are encouraged to call 402-475-4211 or visit LES.com to explore payment options or learn about local aid programs.
