The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says one person was killed when two semis crashed at Highway 77 and Waverly Road around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon. Captain Jon Vik tells KLIN News based on their preliminary investigation a westbound semi that failed to yield to a southbound semi at a stop sign and collided in the intersection.
Vik says at least one of the trucks was hauling grain and both ended up in a ditch. “The driver of the westbound truck was ejected from the vehicle and was airlifted to a local hospital.” Despite life saving measures, the driver was pronounced dead.
Vik says the southbound driver was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. LSO says Highway 77 between Mill and Bluff Roads, as well as Waverly Road from 40th to 70th streets, will still be closed for awhile, but Vik was hopeful the northbound lanes could re-open for the drive home.
The Nebraska State Patrol assisted at the scene.
