The race for to represent Nebraska’s First Congressional District has officially begun.

Eric Moyer, a Lincoln man with years of experience in the solar industry and a handful of acting credits, announced Thursday he’ll seek the Democratic nomination to face off against incumbent Republican Mike Flood on the 2026 ballot.

“Nebraska deserves representation that considers the needs of our state, not special interest groups or the whims of Donald Trump,” said Moyer on his campaign website. In an interview with Nebraska Public Media, Moyer said energy security will be a key issue for his campaign.

“I want to support legislation that allows for domestic energy production to come back, and reverse the cuts that were made in the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ that are going to damage wind and solar industry, as well as a renewed focus on nuclear,” Moyer told NPM’s Jackie Ourada.

NE-01 covers the state capital Lincoln, as well as the cities of Bellevue, Fremont, and Norfolk. It encompasses several counties, including the eastern section of Sarpy County, the northeast quarter of Polk County, and the 10 entire counties of Cass, Lancaster, Seward, Butler, Dodge, Colfax, Platte, Cuming, Stanton, and Madison.

So far, no other Democrats have entered the race. The Nebraska Democratic Party said Thursday on social media “You will get to know Eric Moyer and his platform in the coming weeks! We are very excited to rally behind him to break the one-party rule in Nebraska.”

Thursday’s announcement follows a bitter Monday town hall in Lincoln, where residents loudly booed Congressman Flood over his support for President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” and lingering resentment over wealth inequality.

Moyer is a Nebraska native and two-time University of Nebraska–Lincoln graduate, born Madison. He’s worked in the solar industry since 2016, covering marketing, sales, design, installation, and maintenance. At Nelnet Renewable Energy, he leads C&I opportunity development and manages developer relationships.

His campaign website lists his platform as advocating fair wages, expanding access to affordable healthcare, establishing “smart” immigration policies, and committing to domestic energy production.

A campaign kick off event is planned for Thursday, August 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Turbine Flats (2124 ‘Y’ Street) in Lincoln. More information is available at mobilize.us/nebdems.
