Lincoln authorities are investigating a carbon monoxide poisoning that left three people unresponsive.

Officer Erin Spilker says police were sent to a living space above a detached garage in the 1300 block of North 45th st. just before 4 AM Tuesday after receiving a report from UNL Police that someone had called them with concern for people at the residence.

Spilker says when officers arrived, they initially believed the incident may be narcotics-related and tried contacting the property owner, who eventually gave permission to the officers to enter the garage.

When they investigated the further, they reported hearing a woman struggling to breathe in the living space above the garage.

A man and two women were discovered unconscious and were pulled out of the space by the three officers at the scene.

Spilker says all three victims were transported with life-threatening conditions.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue Spokeswoman Nancy Krist says crews logged CO levels near 500 parts per million.

“Remember that a residential CO detector will alarm at 30 parts per million, so 500 parts per million is a significant exposure,” said Krist.

The fire inspector, building and safety, and utilities are assisting to ensure the building is safe.

The source of the carbon monoxide is still unknown and being investigated.
