Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has been banned from performing in the UK following the announcement that he would be headlining Wireless Music Festival July 10th – 12th.
Ye recently released his latest Album Bully, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100. Following the release, Ye hosted 2 sold-out shows at So-Fi Stadium in Los Angeles. The second show on April 3rd generated $18 million according to Bloomberg.
UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has expressed his disagreement with Wireless Festival choosing to announce Ye as their headlining act. “The Home Office has withdrawn Ye’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders”, according to Complex.com.
The artist formerly know as Kanye West came under fire in recent years with various Anti-Semitic comments towards the Jewish community. Ye also released numerous songs highlighting these past beliefs, though they were banned on popular streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. Following these comments, Ye has made numerous attempts to make amends with the Jewish community by meeting with religious leaders about taking next steps.
Following the announcement of the cancelation of Wireless Festival, Ye released a statement shared to Complex by representatives of the festival:
“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace and love through my music,” the rapper said. “I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the U.K. in person, to listen. I know words aren’t enough. I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
