The No. 1 Nebraska softball team saw its season end in Oklahoma City at the Women’s College World Series as Texas defeated the Cornhuskers, 3-1, Sunday in the elimination bracket.
For a while, it looked like Jordy Frahm would single-handedly propel them to victory. Frahm led off the game with a home run to center field, then threw 5.1 innings of no-hit ball. But in the bottom of the sixth, Jaycie Nichols stroked an infield single through the left side. Kayden Henry followed with a single to right. Then Katie Stewart clubbed a three-run home run to left, putting the Longhorns ahead for good.
Teagan Kavan (27-6) took the win, allowing just one hit and four runs in seven innings. Frahm (21-6) was saddled with the loss, allowing three earned runs in six innings. With her home run earlier in the game, though, Frahm became the first player in college softball history with multiple seasons of 20 home runs and 20 wins as a pitcher.
The Huskers’ season ends with 52 wins, tying the 2000 team for most in Nebraska softball history. The Huskers’ win Thursday over Arkansas was NU’s first in the WCWS in 24 years. Nebraska loses a sizable senior class, including Frahm, shortstop Ava Kuszak, pitcher and outfielder Hannah Camenzind, second baseman Lauren Camenzind, centerfielder Hannah Coor and rightfielder Kacie Hoffmann.
